questions for the sheff books

How do you know that someone is addicted? (Is addiction different from use, abuse, binging?)

Why do you think Nick became addicted?  Why is his experience with drug use different from his father’s?

What does it mean to be powerless against addiction? (from 12-step approach) Is Nick powerless?

How does Nick’s life look similar to and different from the typical image of an addict?

What do you learn about research on addiction/treatment from David Sheff?

How does treatment currently work?  Why do you think it is only marginally effective at helping people to overcome addictions?
