A few radio shows…

Here is the story of the man who treats heroin addiction with Ibogaine.  (I think in class I said it was alcoholism, but I was wrong.) You will find this story in Act 2: I’m not a doctor but I play one at the Holiday Inn

David Sedaris talks about his use of ecstasy in the creation of his art.  You will find this story in Act 2: Still Life - http://www.thislife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?sched=1200

Today’s Class

Hi Drugs and Society Students,

I’m sorry to say that I am still sick. So, instead of holding class, I’m posting a powerpoint presentation on Blackboard (http://courses.ithaca.edu) that covers the remaining material on marijuana and a brief introduction to LSD. Please read through this material before class next Monday.

In addition, since we have not yet had a chance to talk about the paper, I think it is unfair to expect you to turn it in by Friday. Thus, I’m pushing the paper draft date back 1 week. Your draft is now due on Friday, Oct 30 by 5 PM. We will then have our mandatory class on Monday, November 2. (If this change presents any problems for you, let me know.)

I am confident that I will be back in the swing of things next week. And I thank you for doing some of our coursework on your own. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

One more thing…

One of your classmates just let me know that tonight on A&E at 9 they are showing “Pot City, USA.” Here’s the description from the website:

A lot of people think that Humboldt County in northern California is an American paradise. Small towns in the county like Arcata look like they’ve been plucked right out of a Norman Rockwell painting. But the town has a dirty little secret–law enforcement officials say that over 1,000 homes there may be growing marijuana illegally. Capt. Mark Chapman and the Humboldt County Drug Task Force are determined to take back the town, house by house. Our cameras follow as they make busts and fly over forestlands searching for hidden marijuana groves.

If you are interested, check it out! It is certainly relevant to our class on Wednesday.

Also, today the Obama administration announced (again) that they will stop pursuing cases against medical marijuana smokers in states that have legalized it. Here’s a little more information on their announcement – http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/19/new-medical-marijuana-pol_n_325426.html

Today’s class

Here is the email I sent earlier today…

Unfortunately, I am sick today and will not be able to attend class. In lieu of class, I’d like to you watch a few videos online and look at 2 websites BEFORE Wednesday’s class. Please, please review this material so that we can hit the ground running on Wednesday.
First, I’d like you to continue to watch the film we started last week, In Pot We Trust.

Watch Part 3, starting at 2:10

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2GOwTj3B3Y&feature=related

And also Part 4, up until 6:20

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3ysQMrIqAc&feature=related

Second, we will talk specifically about the case of Angel Racih, who is the only person to challenge current medical marijuana laws at the Supreme Court level. Read a little about Angel Raich here – http://www.angeljustice.org/article.php?list=type&type=6

And read the Wikipedia overview of the supreme court case here – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gonzales_v._Raich . We will talk about the details of the case in class.

Finally, I’d also like you to watch two parts of the documentary Hooked

Part 2 – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAv0B8H2YSE&feature=related

Part 3 – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZkYpKIVdpI&feature=related

This film will give you more information on the Marijuana Tax Stamp Act of 1937.

Regarding your exams, I will have these for you in class on Wednesday.

Regarding the draft of your paper, your goal is to write a formal journal-style paper. You can use the Orcutt & Turner and also the Faupel & Klockars articles as models (obviously yours will be much shorter!). As for the draft you submit on Friday, you should strive to turn in as full of a draft as possible. The more you turn in, the more you can get feedback on. However, it is better to turn in an incomplete draft than none at all!

Finally, those of you scheduled to present on the psychedellic articles (by Hays and Klam), I’m going to reschedule these presentations for next Monday. I’ll chat with you about these articles on Wednesday.

I know this is a lot of information at once! Please let me know if you have any questions!
